squidsin
I am referring to a chicken bum here of course! Nugget's is a bit dirty - I've given her a wipe but it wasn't particularly effective. What's the best way of dealing with it? Can I use human handsoap or shampoo and warm water to clean her feathers? Also, neither of my two has laid an egg yet. They're 8 months old and pekin bantams - which I know aren't prolific layers anyway. Is this normal? And I am already thinking of adding to the brood with either a pair of bantam orpingtons or frizzles in a few weeks time. Which should I go for? I'd like some that do pop out a few eggs fairly regularly, ideally, but it's most important that they are happy, docile little pets - that don't mess up my garden too much and are friendly with my toddler but can stand up to my cat! - like my pekins. Sorry for the recent barrage of questions - you are all helping me on the path to henlightenment.

chick wiggle
I give mine a good 'ol bath in warm water with Ecover washing up liquid and then give them a blowdry with the hairdryer and they do enjoy that. I have a little pekin bantam and shes tiny and adorable and quite easy to catch and pick up as they cant run so very fast. She stands up for herself with the other bigger girls too. As for them not laying, cant really help you much there but im sure someone will come along soon with some answers. Have they been wormed recently? What's the best way of dealing with it? Can I use human handsoap or shampoo and warm water to clean her feathers? I use my neices johnsons baby shampoo - smells great and good for sensitive feathers of my silkie girls and smells great! Also, neither of my two has laid an egg yet. They're 8 months old and pekin bantams - which I know aren't prolific layers anyway. Is this normal? Totally normall.. trust me i got mine in december 09, and they only just started laying on the 15th of march 2010! but once they lay they do lay quite good, one of mine lays every other day and one lays every day without fail- same with my silkie x pekins. beautiful ladies if you ask me but always worm them, that may be the problem.. . And I am already thinking of adding to the brood with either a pair of bantam orpingtons or frizzles in a few weeks time. Which should I go for? Most can stand up too a cat.. i'd go for bantam orps, they're very beutiful with a good temperment. my friend has several frizzles and they dig up the garden like no-ones buisniss, they are very friendly though- too Sorry for the recent barrage of questions - you are all helping me on the path to henlightenment. haha your welcome, any more questions feel free to ask me in private
Mollie333
I also spray Aussie spray leave in conditinor (for human hair) on the bird, then dry off with the hair dryer, leaves my silkie, SILKIE soft, which also smells great, then they go and have a dust bath.. squidsin
Thanks so much for the advice - I'll use my baby's organic shampoo then, that should be nice and gentle on her feathers. Nugget (the cuckoo pekin with the grubby bot) actually seems to like being picked up and stroked (my white pekin Popcorn is shyer, even though she is top hen) so I think she'll enjoy a bath! I've not wormed them - only had them a week - but will order some now. I'm talking to a man about some chocolate split orp bantams - they're still babies but they do sound gorgeous and I can wait...
