Forgive another dozy question but... how do I know who's top chicken? Mine seem to get along fine - no pecking at each other - but I have no idea who's boss!

I think it might be Artemis, but only because if I feed them corn from my hand she'll eat the corn straight from my hand while Athene eats the bits that Artemis spills although Athene will also quite happily eat from my hand... I spose it doesn't really matter - would just be interesting to know! :?

Mine seem to have formed a hung parliament where they both share equal duties! I thought Popcorn was Chief Chook but on reflection, that might just be because she is the brighter of the pair so zooms in first when food is concerned. Nugget likes to scratch about in flower beds more than anything else in the world, and she's pecked at Popcorn a few times when Popcorn's gone for a bug she's unearthed. Oh well I am introducing a third (and possibly a fourth) this weekend so I guess I'll see then if a definite hierarchy emerges. I doubt it though. I think my chickens are liberals, into equality, like their Mama!

Amber is the top hen but she lets Summer think she's in charge. It is cleverly and subtly done. Poor Chicken Bark has to do all the hard work such as digging the dust baths etc only to let the others have first go.

I wonder if the pecking order will change when Chicken Bark starts laying - if she ever starts laying :!:

Blodwyn always gets first dibs for the food, and is always first out and last into the Cube at night, so I guess she is top chook. Gwennie is definitely bottom chook in that she picks up the stuff under the feeders and so on, but she isn't scared to fight for her share of grapes or mealworms :)

There is some subtlety in the Gwennie is definitely the cleverest of the chickens, so she gets over her position by being able to think through problems and get more food that way.

When we brought home our first two, there didn't appear to be a pecking order. It was only when we got our second two (only three days later) that a definate pecking order emerged. It was Ginger, from the first pair that took charge and she is the smallest and possibly youngest of the four.
