I used to use a cat litter tray filled with wood ash from the fire and dry compost. Anything for them to roll around in and get in between their feathers will be fine. Sand is ok, but fine sand, not builders sand is best. Chickens feathers easily become water logged, so they wouldn't use a water bath.
