zigzagzugal
Hi, We have recently purchased our Eglu with thanks to this forum, we have been looking around at where to get our chickens, our daughter is really excited and is wanting to get 4 chickens so she can call them after the main characters on the film Madagascar, 3 male name's we know but she is only 3!!! Would you say the Eglu is too small for 4 chickens!!! Many thanks
Ain't Nobody Here
I would say the eglu itself would be OK but the run not, unless they were allowed to freerange most of each day. You could get a converter and they wouldn't be so cramped (but some freeranging would still be best) .
chickyhazel
You can have 4 standard sized chickens. I would recommend 1 square metre per chicken, which would mean 2 run extensions to the standard run. We have 4 in our with a 4m run and they are fine.
zigzagzugal
Thanks guy's, now i'm thinking on postponing the purchase of the MADAGASCAR CREW and building a walk in run as we were hoping on purchasing more chickens if all goes well! so I guess if we were to do that we could then just purchase another Eglu to put into the walk in run! Is that a good idea!!!
Ain't Nobody Here
Sounds like a great plan to me . I always think 2 eglus would be good as they'd give you flexibility for introductions etc. I take it you've checked out the "we're all planning walk in runs" and "chicken run inspiration" threads ? Olly
Definitely - if you have room/can afford it, a walk-in run is the way to go. ANH and I both have five hens sleeping in one Eglu inside a walk-in run, they generally prefer to all sleep together and it's the space available to them during the day which is more important. I think if you had more than five you'd need a second Eglu, though! Lots of advice and inspiration on the threads about walk-in runs. Ain't Nobody Here
Actually I have zero hens sleeping in my eglu . They all sleep outside in the WIR now . Makes for a very clean eglu though, I haven't had to clean it for weeks .
