jam
Hi all I have My first broody hen! I saw her sitting in the nest this morning and thought she was laying an egg, but went to see the chooks this afternoon and she was still there sitting on the eggs layed by my other chooks. I'm soo tempted to get some indian runner duck eggs to put under her! (would have to persuade my parents first...) Good idea? I already have 9 chicks in the brooder, But i have various empty guinea pig hutches and runs to put her and her brood in. Any advice would be great, never hatched under a broody hen before. How would I be able to test if she was a reliable sitter? Thanks Scarlett
Lewis
Its still early days Hilary was broody for over a week before she got the eggs, so by that time we knew she was broody. Nugget has been sitting in the Go for 2 days so I think she's broody, but she's done it before and then got off after a few days Try her with any old eggs and see if she sits on them, then after a few days you could swap her to a separate hutch at night, and then maybe the next day give her some fertile eggs. tom123
I would leave her for another 1-2 days with some fake/spare eggs and then move her into a broody coop along with the fake eggs. Leave her here with the fake eggs for another 2 days and if she is still sitting and is settled then swap the fake for the real eggs
