UPDATED..How long after crouching do chickens start laying?

Recommended Posts

Hi :D

**********************************************************************************************************************************

UPDATE

Violet just laid an egg :clap: It may be her first or second...not sure...but will hopefully be able to tell when Gertrude lays

***********************************************************************************************************************************

I am sure I read somewhere that chickens usually lay approx 10 days after crouching

Gertrude (Magpie) has been crouching for over 3 weeks now...she has sat on the nest at least twice...although this could be more as I don't watch them all the time. I believe Gertrude is approx 31-33 weeks now. Violet has been crouching for a couple of weeks and no sign of an egg from her either :anxious:

Nearly a week ago I found a brown egg in one of the nest boxes...it definitely didn't belong to any of the other girls and I am suspicious it was either Gertrude or Violet that laid it.

Every day I wait in vain for either of them to lay and also to put the mystery of the 'rogue' brown egg to rest.

Do hens lay when they are 'ready' or do any of you use 'rubber' eggs to encourage your girls to lay? I usually remove eggs laid by the other girls mid morning, again at lunch time and in the afternoon...as I don't want any of them to become broody by leaving eggs in the nests

Another little mystery...may be you can help me solve  Clara arrived the same day as Gertrude and laid the following day...I weigh her eggs every day and they are always the same...44g :wall:

Any thoughts please?

Thank you...

I've had one whoes been crouching for about 5 weeks and in that time i've had one rogue egg that didn't belong to any of the others. I maintain that she is just to posh to push and will only produce when she's ready. There is no way she's laying anywhere else because the others have been being pains and so i've had to search the garden and run and found all their nests so she's just being missish

Thank you so much for the replies...it's good to know that it isn't unusual for a chicken to crouch for quite a few weeks before laying...I think I have been spoilt in the past because my other girls have crouched and laid within approx 10 days.

I will keep  either Gertrude or Violet will lay soon.

Enjoy your day
