duck question - as in wild ducks on someones pond

Recommended Posts

My Mum has a very small pond in her back garden, and I mean about 4ft x 4ft, it has no fish, only plants but it's very well matured. It also has a LOT of frogs and subsequently a lot of frog spawn / tadpoles.

So tonight, for the first time ever, it also has two ducks! A duck and a drake, mallard I presume from what she's said. They're swimming up and down (about 2 paddles each way! ) and they seem to be eating - doing that filter thing they do with their beaks. So the question is, are they after the duck weed and other plants (in which case fine) or the tadpoles, in which case not quite so fine (although there are HUNDREDS!)

And any idea why, when they have a MASSIVE lake not even 1/4 of a mile away as the duck flies, they would choose a very sheltered, almost impossible to see from the air 4ft pond as their temporary resting site?

Maybe they are looking for a quiet place to rear some litt'uns

We have had a trio, 2 boys & a girl of mallards under our bird table for the past 2-3 weeks, we have no pond but do have a drainage ditch along our boundary which they plop down into every so often. Our neighbours with no pond/no ditch etc have had ducks nest in their front garden in the deepest part of the border in previous years..until their children discovered them & scared them away :x

We are hoping they might nest with us this year as they've been fairly undisturbed in the front garden due to the bee hive being a fairly active arrival last summer :D
