Oh no - frost disaster

Recommended Posts

I thought we were safe here in London at this time of year - but my potato plants have been frost-bitten! They were really lush and healthy and verdant - the envy of the allotments - but now some of the leaves are withered and brown. I should have chucked a fleece over them at the time but it's too late now. Is there anything I can do to nurture them back to full health? It's really bad timing as some of them were just beginning to flower.

earth them up or mulch them putting a fleece over will in crease the humidity if it gets left on in the day which increases the chance of early blight

blight needs a high humidity but only about 20 degrees C which under fleece wouldn't take much

If it is only a few leaves they will grow out of it, it looks like we are in for some warmer weather for the next couple of weeks. I hope they are ok for you, ours are no where near so advanced so we were able to just earth them up, but still have a little frost damage. I am glad that we were late planting them.

I never realised that - I will remove my fleece then! Thanks for the tip.

Re the frost-bitten leaves: they should come away fine, the frost wouldn't be hard enough to affect the tuber.
