enpekt
Sweetie unusually hadn't laid for a couple of days, she was standing 'fluffed' and 'wide' yesterday afternoon and straining. Some poo was coming out and she was making a little 'oh' sound when it came out. I thought it was a softie as another chook stands similarly with softies. Expected to find one in cube today but didn't. She is still straining today. There was sight of a bit of sac earlier but can't see it now. She isn't mopey and wants to go out with the others. How can I help her pass this. Local vets closed and not very chicken experienced any way. Advices please as soon as possible.
staceychristie
Is her abdomen hard? (the bit between her vent and between her legs?) She's eating drinking ok? Stacey
Olly
Take a look here for advice about helping a hen to pass a stuck egg. I haven't done this myself - it goes without saying, be very careful because if an egg breaks inside her then that could cause serious problems. enpekt
Hi Stacey, just had a feel, her abdomen is not hard at all, she is eating & drinking, have just given her a piece of bread soaked in zolcal. her vent area is a bit mucky, she is usually pristine. Not sure whether to try to put her in warm water or what to do. She is slightly quieter than normal but still scratting about, she is having a sun bathe at the moment. Egluntyne
At this stage I'd leave her to it. If she is pottering about, then she won't be in too much discomfort. She may have passed something already as you can no longer see the sac.
Chucky Mama
I would be inclined to observe at the moment too. The more she moves around the more likely things are to get moving. I wouldn't give her Zolcal above the recommended dose though, so no more today for sure.
enpekt
Thanks Chucky Mama and Egluntyne, Have taken your advice and am just observing, she seems okay at the moment and I and I haven't seen her straining for a while. Just to mention, I only gave her a little corner of bread with a measured dose of Zolcal based on her weight not a whole soaked slice! Sorry if I mislead you. No worries Glad to hear that all appears to be OK. I would keep a close eye on her until she lays her next egg.
enpekt
Thanks for all your reassurance! Sweetie was first to lay this morning, all back to normal. Does everyone get the same heartache?
