I've just had my first 'shared joy of chickens' experience!

 

On returning home from work I let my chickens out to FR (only the third time so I'm still a little nervous - they're fine about it ). It was bright and sunny so pulled up a chair and was contemplating the day whilst enjoying their potterings. From the front of my house I heard shouting and then someone walking up my path. Conversation as follows:

 

Me: Yes?

Lady: OMG I'm so excited, I just had to come round.

Me: (cagily) Pardon?

Lady: The chickens. OMG! They're brilliant. I can't beIieve it. I just had to come round.

 

This went on for some time. It transpires the lady (Jane)lives on the street behind me. For two weeks since we put up our she'd spied what she'd thought might a chicken run if she leaned right out of her daughter's window. They'd been looking for further evidence that is was in fact chickens, and when we'd let them out today her daughter had spotted them. This resulted in her belting round, trying to find the house to which they belonged. She's mad about chickens and is currently awaiting her own arrivals.

 

What a great lady - she declared that she was thrilled someone with a shared interest was so close (she's been worried that all her close neighbours would think she was a little crazy - hmm, like bounding up a stranger's garden wasn't a little crazy? ). We had a great chat for ages, until she thought she ought to go home having not explained to her OH why she'd dashed out of the house 30 mins earlier!

 

Also, she's offered her services if ever we need a chicken sitter and asked if we minded if she pops round again. I've lived in my house for ten years and she's lived in hers for seven and with the arrival of chickens, think I've just made a new friend.

 

Anyone else found chickens have made them new friends?

Thats lovely, and so true

 

I have spoken to my neighbours far more since having the girls, and have made some new friends with neighbours too (including an elderly gentleman who has lived around the corner from me for 9 years)

 

In addition, I have made so many friends through the forum too, some of which are now "real life" friends now too

YES!!!

 

Our girls are a real talking point in the road - all the enighbours ask how they're doing and the whole street seems to go into mourning when one of them leaves this mortal plain I've also made new friends from people who come over for something different (i.e. freecycle), see the girls, and it goes on from there

 

They really are wonderful little souls, couldn't be without them now*

*and nor could hubby, although he's let ready to admit it

I've made lots of lovely real friends through this forum. It's good to have people who understand out love of chickens.

We had the Jehovas Witnesses round and I told them I was just on my way out [as you do]. As they were leaving one of them asked how I was getting on with the chickens, we then spent about 15 mins chatting away about chickens as they were thinking of getting some.
