I hope that she gets on alright at the vets.

I have had a problem with a severely limping hen, she got so bad that she couldn't walk. The vet said that is was probably a torn ligament. He prescribed Metacam and she did live in the house with us for 6 weeks until she got better! I have since been told that it was most probably a calcium deficiency though. So i'm now waiting for a delivery of limestone powder. They are such a worry its like having babies! :)

Well its been a horrible day our poor hen marmalade was put to sleep she was 5 years old :( l have not cryed like this in ages she was not the sort of hen that would come over but she was one of our first hens of 3 and she was the last left.We got them when l had infertility problems and they really helped me cope anyway l was told she showed signs of mareks disease and that it had been caught fairly early for her but there is no treatment :( The vet sqweezed her toes on her left foot and said there is no feeling there she said its like waking up with a dead arm sort of feeling.I have spoken to a breeder were l recently got my 2 16 week old chickens she asures me that they had been vaccinated against the mareks twice when they were chicks as she said there has been a rise in this disease were some people are breeding them in gardens and buying them cheap as there not vaccinated. We have 4 ex battery girls which l know are vaccinated. We lost a hen last week she was also put to sleep with lumps in her tummy this is also another sign :( so we may have lost 2 we dont know for certain that this is what she had wrong with her as no blood was taken but l have asked about an autopsy so l have to let them know in the morning what im concerned about is the lady vet that has told us about what she has could be wrong but will she tell us if she was wrong having put her to sleep now.Have any one of you chicken keepers had any dealing with the disease. This evening we have spent hours taking every thing out there run and bleaching it and every log too this was advised by the vet.My run was not that bad but l dont like chemicals incase the ducks drink it but we have had to move them about.Just hope we dont lose anymore
