mobilecat
Greetings all, I would like to get your opinions on whether you think 2 black jersey giant hens could live comfortably in an classic eglu. I was offered some salmon favorelle eggs to incubate and 2 chicks hatched. Problem is that they are either pure JG's or a mix of salmon fav and jersey giant. Since this was my first attempt at ever incubating eggs, I feel pretty attached to the chicks and would be keen on keeping them if they are girls. They would be in the std classic eglu during the week and free range in the yard on the weekends. Thanks
Christian
Sorry, but I would say that the eglu is too small for Jersey Giants. They are massive!
Egluntyne
I agree. I doubt you would get one in it comfortably, let alone 2.
ISCA
I have never seen one in the flesh, but are they much larger than an Orpington or Brahma? People keep those in Eglus I believe? Even if they fit in the Eglu, would the Eglu run be space enough for such big birds? Maybe you will need to upgrade to a cube/ wooden hen house? Jools
Party Pooper here again My impression is that the eglu was designed primarily to make it easy to keep a couple of hybrids safely in the back garden. Some pure breed chickens aren't much bigger than a hybrid, but some are much bigger - Brahma, Cochin, Oprington and yes Jersey Giant. Regardless of whether or not they'll fit, there is not enough headroom in either the house or run for any of them - sorry.
laurmurf
I kept 3 Malays in an eglu without a run (in a WIR) and they're taller than Jersey Giants (not as wide though). If you are planning to use the eglu and run just for roosting, and will free range all day then i would have thought it would work. It won't work if you are planning on keeping them in the eglu run all the time: it's just too small: think two fat men in a toilet cubicle....
