Hi

I have a couple of balding chickens, one really very bald now from the base of the comb round to the back of her head,and at least one other going the same way

 

We have 14 chooks, and the first one I noticed going bald is the bottom of the pecking order and always looks a bit scruffy and harrassed so I thought she had just been extra pecked :boohoo:but now one or two other lowly chooks are looking a bit baldy

 

My big bossy chooks seem fine

 

Any suggestions By the way, the baldy chooks seem otherwise happy and healthy.

Are you sure it isn't a moult? It usually starts around the head.

 

 

If not, then check for lice and keep a close eye on the others to see if they are pulling feathers.

Isn't it rather early for moult? My chooks didn't moult last year

until about September or October??

 

But I'll do a more thorough lice check.

Hens usually moult in the autumn, but depending on when they were hatched, can moult at any time of year.

Mine don't seem to follow the moulting handbook . A couple don't seem to have ever moulted and one is in full moult just now - so it could be a moult with yours!

Are you sure that a feather pecker hasn't turned her attention to the others?

If there is a feather pecker at work I have not caught her head-pecking.....my chooks are beginning to look quite strange, like some special breed

 

I shall have to do some covert surveillance
