DominicJ
I need to join this little thread as I started last year growing veg but have not a clue how to compost! The chicken poo I have been collecting each morning and just throw onto my veggie bed then dig it in. Questions: if I get a compost bin what goes in it, does it smell and what do I do with it Thanks, Lizzie Grass, Paper, Veg, poo. You want mostly Veg in it though. Grass is good, but not if you've got loads, I could fill a big darlick with grass everymonth, which wouldnt make good compost. Paper is good, people suggest scrunching it into balls to create airpockets, I've not seen results from that yet. Veg, peelings, gone off stuff, ect. Poo. A lot of people say dont put poo in, unless its vegetarian, but I disagree. Although I only have a chiuaha. Mine doesnt smell Put ingrediants in it (see above), turn it a bit every now and again, put it on your garden. Wether you need three Darlics and you fill one and leave it for a year whilst filling the others, or just have one and empty a bit from the bottom every now and again will depend on how much space you have and how much material you have to fill them. If I had the space, I'd have half a dozen for my grass, but dont, so it just gets used to fill holes.

C&T
thank you - is best place to buy the garden stores? I have seen the galvanised steel bins You might want to try your council - they often offer them at reduced prices to encourage people not to fill their bins or the dump with the rubbish. jennydavies
When I make up the bucket of chicken poo and water, I leave the open bucket in the corner of the veg garden, I don't cover it and I can't smell it unless I go over to where it's kept. I pour the contents of the bucket onto the ground around the veggies and then give it an extra watering just to make sure it's not too strong. Our stuff in the veg garden is doing really well compared to our friends that don't have chickens, we will have a bumper crop of tomatoes this year I am also growing runner beans, courgettes, cucumbers, lettuces, peppers, strawberries and some herbs. Next year I will be more organised, this year is only our first attempt at growing.
ubereglu
We have several compost heaps in our garden, (4). One of them is open topped and the hens go on it, so this one doesn't get chicken poo in it. This is important, as it's not a good idea to let them dig through their own poo really, so that one is designated as food waste, (eg, potato peelings and things) and grass clippings. My brother has nicknamed it the chicken buffet! Two of them get chicken manure put into them with quite a lot of newspaper and they get the green stuff from the food compost heap put into them to get the right mix. The fourth one gets all the partly rotted compost put into it.
