We came home to.......

Recommended Posts

........bees in our bait hive

We went away for a few days leaving the few remaining (Queenless and aimless) bees in one hive and the empty bait hive nearby. I left my son farm sitting and with instructions that it was OK to mow the grass in the small orchard as there were only a few bees hanging around. We usually cut the area near the hives with hand shears and late evening so as not to upset the bees......

He phoned us to say he'd mowed towards the hives and a mass of bees were suddenly very interested in him and he'd taken the mower away and left them to it. I couldn't understand why until we came home last evening and found we have bees in the bait hive!

I'll just observe them today and see what is happening. We have two Nucs. on order ready to collect this week so if the bait hive is occupied by a swarm and is functioning then we'll need to sort out another spare hive as we will then have 3 hives with bees, and we only have 3 hives altogether.

We have found a mentor who will come and look at our bees if we feel we need him to and he came over this morning to go through the hive with us :D

It appears to be a swarm with the original queen so we'll need to keep an eye out for supersedure in case she is failing.

We have around 12,000 to 15,000 bees and they are doing well, we have brood and the workers are bringing in plenty of pollen and nectar. Fingers crossed for a good summer.
