Laying in the run?

Recommended Posts

We've had our girls for nearly 2 weeks now - Mrs Bennet (our Bluebelle) is laying pretty much every day, and Miss Bartlett hasn't started laying yet.

Today, I got home to find no egg in the nest box, but a yolk in the run. Is this just one of those things, or something I need to be aware of?

Thanks in advance for any help, and sorry if it's a really daft question! :)

When they first start laying trhere will often be shell less softies that they lay. I witnessed one being laid when I first got my girls and it was almost as though she was taken by surprise with it.

Every now and then I still get an egg in the run but I think it is when the nest box is being occupied. We have two eglus but they always lay in just one of them - daft chooks.

I am sure that others may have more advice. By the way - love the names of your girls :)

Since I posted that we've had no eggs at all  Both hens look healthy enough and they're both eating and drinking plenty. Miss Bartlett isn't ready to lay yet, but we'd had 6 in 6 days from Mrs Bennet, then nothing at all for 4 days.

Can't help but worry. I'm obviously an overly-anxious chicken mama

We got our bluebell last year. She took an age to lay. When she did start it was for about a month and then she stopped completely for a couple of months. She started again for about another three weeks and then stopped for almost another two months!! We had just resigned ourselves to the fact that we had a real free loader but she has now become pretty regular.

I wouldn't worry too much. they take a while to get into their stride!
