Salmonella Vaccination

Recommended Posts

Hi

A friend has just told me that hens need vaccinating againt salmonella on a yearly basis. Is this right? I haven't heard about this before. Is it vital? Is it necessary? Or only if you are selling the eggs? I don't sell mine, I only have three hens but as she has 18 hens she does sell hers.

Marsha is an Omlet hen and is 2 1/2. I had 2 Speckeldys for a year who I presume were vaccinated as they came from the Domestic Fowl Trust. I gave them to my friend with the flock of 18 as they kept attacking me and my children. (They have since calmed down being with more hens) I have just picked up my latest 2 from Omlet who I now know to be vaccinated. But will they need a booster next year? Does Marsha need a booster? :?

Sorry for all the questions. Hope someone can shed some light!

Cheers

Not necessary.

If she is breeding and selling, she may prefer to vaccinate hers but many breeders, especially hobby breeders don't bother because the vaccines are only available in industrial quantities and with a very short shelf life once opened, rendering it very expensive.

Phew! Thanks! I thought I'd have heard about it but you never know. These things have a habit of creeping upon you don't they?! A vet told her that they need vaccinating annually but as she is selling a dozen a day maybe that is to protect her. I won't bother as mine don't often get much further than our kitchen!

Thanks very much.
