coco
Prue is having trouble pooing, she is laying and eating and drinking normally but is having difficulty passing droppings. I washed her vent area last night as I was worried about flystrike. She is looking very miserable, any ideas what I can give her to help her go, I thought about cod liver oil. thanks. Egluntyne
What is her normal diet? A little codliver oil added to her pellets won't do her any harm, but it is quite unusual for a hen to have trouble in this department. How does her belly feel? Is it soft or rigid? hippy chick
I give my chuck 2ml of liquid parafin every few days. She has a tumour/egg laying tackle problem. This seems to keep everything moving along for her.
coco
Her belly feels normal, their diet is layers pellets with a bit of corn at night to get them in the run and greens a few times a week, they have dandelion leaves most days. The only thing I can think of is that she seemed to be hot on Sunday and was laying down in the shade more than the others, I'm wondering if she could have got dehydrated. When she's not trying to poo she seems perfectly normal and comes running when called.
Egluntyne
To be honest. I'd not worry too much at this stage. She sounds reasonably chipper. She could be pooing when you are not around.
Chucky Mama
Are you sure that she is trying to poo You can encourage her to take on more fluid by perhaps making her pellets into a mash. I wouldn't give her anything without confirming that she is constipated and investigating why this could be.
coco
She's definately trying to poo as I can see it coming out ans she is getting messy knickers. she's straining like mad with her eyes closed, bless her. I might try some prune juice later, it worked wonders on the kids when they were babies.
Egluntyne
I'd cut out any corn from her diet for now as this has a tendency to bung them up. Messy knickers suggests worms to me. Perhaps she is trying to expel a parasite. Might be worth giving her a course of Flubenvet. The vent does pulsate most of the tieme nanyway. Are you confusing this with straining? coco
They are due to be wormed soon and I have flubenvet ordered. She is definately straining, she has her wings spread head up to the sky and eyes closed, she's putting a lot of effort into trying to poo.
