Lavenders_Blue
....... they killed and attempted to eat a fledgling sparrow today I was occupied in the veg patch when I heard a commotion behind me and turned around to see Queenie running off with a baby sparrow in her beak, closely pursued by the others. I hurdled the netting (never knew I was so athletic!) and attempted to remove the baby as it was still alive and the poor parent birds were calling, but Queenie galloped off to the end of the garden where upon all 4 hens fought over the prize. Don't know if it's their beaks or if a feathery meal is difficult to deal with as there seemed to be great difficulty eating said sparrow; it was shook, shook again, semi swallowed, regurgitated, swallowed again, regurgitated again... In the end I distracted them with a handful of mealworms and put baby sparrow in it's final resting place in the wheelie bin On the plus side - it's nice to know that the girls have put their battery cage days well and truly behind them! jennydavies
Our girls caught a fully grown male sparrow in their WIR and pecked him to death They are quite territorial about their area and don't like any other birds coming near. They don't mind chatting to the little Naked Necks that live next door but I think that's because they know that they can't get too close because of the fence.
