meezers
Aw, what a shame, RIP little chick. Sorry, have no idea what may have caused it, though the fluid from the beak did ring a bell with a post I read on Practical poultry forum a few weeks ago, but I think that chick was a few hours old I'll have a look later, see if I can find the post. Redwing
Sorry about your poor chick Do check the chicks for signs of Coccidiosis as wings slightly away from the body and/or dropped is a sign of it The liquid from the mouth may just be as a result of spasms upon dying Sometimes though chicks just arent strong enough to make it and there is no obvious cause of death
sjp
the RIR has died now i was a bit sad looking about 8 am when I checked them but i was moving about a bit like a hen thats got a softie on the way found it about 10:30 completly stiff and stone cold the RIR was the first to hatch the Black Araucana chick was the second both were about day early hatching by my maths the Black Araucana chick was about 13 days old the RIR was 13.5 days old
Redwing
More than one death in a batch of chicks normally points to coccidiosis Are they on medicated chick crumb? If not I'd get them some as a precaution or get hold of some Coxoid for their water - it wont do them any harm and will save some if that is what has caused the deaths. timely treatment is important with cocci
joza2210
Sorry To hear about your chicks But Coxoid does work a treat ... I just put it in there water any way ... Fingers crossed everything is ok now

Roobaloo
Sorry to hear about this...so sad. What is coccidiosis? Is it very common? I've never heard of medicated chick crumb...where can you get it from?
Redwing
Coccidiosis is a disease that is quite common in chicks, it has a few causes, dampness is a major cause, I put all my drinkers on J cloths now and change those regularly as dampness travels in woodshavings, it can be cause by dirty conditions or contact with older hens poo too but sometimes its just one of those things Runny poo, dropped wings, pooey bottoms and general listnessness (is that a word??) are symptoms and blood in the poo is a sign that things are pretty bad Getting medicated chick crumb is not very easy - I get mine from Thornes or from a place in Cambridgeshire You often see it described as ACS - 'chick crumb with ACS' I dont always feed it, I keep it for big batches of chicks just to head off any problems - small batches get plain chick crumb and I keep Coxoid ready for any problems with them I have given Coxoid as a preventative for a week when the chicks are a few days old when I couldnt get medicated crumb Coxoid is well worth having 'in stock' if you are hatching - the effects of cocci are swift and chick losses can be high so time is of the essence when it comes to treatment - a bottle of Coxoid is only about £
Roobaloo
Thanks so much for that! I tend to get my stuff from Thornes so it's good to know! Where can you get Coxoid from?

I got mine from a pidgeon supplies place it's for pidgeons really but you can get it on line Flytes so fancy is one place Wells is an other I might have one more go one of the chipmonk twins was looking a bit sorry for it's self about an hour ago but as improved a bit Runny poo, dropped wings, pooey bottoms and general listnessness (is that a word??) are symptoms and blood in the poo is a sign that things are pretty bad the only symptoms I seen are general listnessness and the first one to go holding it's wings slightly open but as it was a hot day I just put it down to that as a couple of the big girls do it to
Jools
So sorry to hear that SJP Most agricultural suppliers stock medicated chick crumb (and growers pellets), just ask for the stuff with ACS. It tends to be branded by the feed mill so it isn't often available from pet-type outlets. I must admit that I wouldn't use anything but medicated chick crumb because coccidiosis acts so quickly, you have little time to respond. It's a little late for me to be piping up now, but I also use Herban in their drinking water from day 1 as a precaution and, because that belts and braces approach doesn't satisfy my paranoia, I grow oregano specifically for my chicks. There is a very effective cocci vaccine for chicks, but it's not available in small doses and doesn't keep. And finally, Baycox is what a vet would normally prescribe for an outbreak, but most use Coxoid as it's widely available without a prescription (but it isn't licensed for poultry). Nowt's simple is it!
sjp
Well it looks like the other 3 are going to be allright touch wood the one 'chipmonk' seems to have perked up part of the proplem with that one is I don't think it's related to the other one as it's stance is totaly differant and it's neck is shorter making it look sad also thet have lost a lot of the fuff so look thiner than the TNN
sjp
one week on and the 3 remaining chicks are fine and healthy they've been on coxoid since last sunday on the full dose do I stop now or put the on the half strength dose as per the instructions?
