Gertie
Hi Everone Can you help? One of my hens laid giant eggs with two yolks quite regularly (not for a while now). It didn't really occur to me that this might not be a good thing until I noticed blood on an egg shell (it wasn't one of the big ones). Do you think laying large eggs could cause blood on eggs? Can this stretch the cloaca irreversibly and could large eggs be caused by too much protein in the diet? Many thanks Erika
jam
One of my ex batts layed a huge double yolker a while ago and occasionally my marans lays some blood streaked eggs. I Tend to reduce the amount of layers pellets, or cut it out all together depending on the severity of the big egg/ bloody egg laying, and give them corn for a couple of days, this usually reduces egg production and gives them a bit of a break. Hope this helps
fantasticjudyann
On a similar topic-my three have always laid large eggs some double yolkers but the last few days one of them has been laying quite small ones. Does anyone know why this may be? They aren't one year old yet and they eat the Dodson and Horrell pellets. They don't free range but have a huge WIR and greens every day. Anyone? Gertie
Thanks for the responses. Lots has happened since then - the blood on eggs attracted pecking from others, 2 lots of antibiotics& thankfully recovery (but noeggs for a month since antibiotics finished). Re protein, I read that any excess protein is excreted in the waste but I don't know if that is true! Regards
