flamingo
Can anyone tell me how long you have to treat scaly leg for? I have a spray which says apply evry 5/6 days until it's better but presumably it takes months for the old scales to slough off and healthy new ones to appear - even after the offending mites have been erradicated... Ain't Nobody Here
I can't remember exactly but I seem to remember only spraying twice with Johnson's. You're right, the scales won't look normal for a long, long time (if ever ).
flamingo
Does it do them any harm if you keep on using it then? I have a spray from 'Net-tex' called 'Just for scaly legs'
Ain't Nobody Here
To be honest, I don't know, but I'd have thought the spray will kill the beasties pretty quickly so there wouldn't be any benefit in more applications. I do remember putting vaseline on Molly's legs to help soothe them when they were looking sore.
lesleysprite
I can tell you what I was advised -paint on surgical spirit once a day for 4 days, then again a couple of months later if it still looks like it needs it. And your spray is probably more effective than surgical spirit. Can't tell you if it works -not found out yet! Lesley
flamingo
Just had reply from my e mail to makers of the spray - v quick reply! They say mites should be gone in 2/3 weeks and dead scales should all have sloughed off about a month later. Hmm... all sounds too good to be true but we'll see. Thanks for your replies. Jools
Mmmmm, established wisdom is that the scales are not shed and renewed until the next moult. I'd be reluctant to over-use the Nettex spray (though I don't know what it contains). If you're not sure the mites have gone after you've treated the legs as per their instructions, I'd be more inclined to revert to vaseline for a few more weeks. The Dogmother
I agree, the scales will start to moult off with the next moult, but some don't come off until the subsequent year. One of my girls had it two years ago and her legs are still k"Ooops, word censored!"bly. You'd be lucky if they ever returned to their former, pristine state TBH. Oiling the legs can help, but the mites seem to damage the scale bed and they just don't grow back properly after that. A good preventative programme with Johnson's anti-mite spray* is best. * not licensed for use on poultry in the UK
Jools
A good preventative programme with Johnson's anti-mite spray* is best A good prevention programme is best, but that doesn't necessary mean Johnson's anit-mite spray There are a lot of options, depending on what approach you want to take to your poultry keeping. There are chemical options, such as the above spray and other not necessarily licensed for poultry products (but which vets can recommend). There are licensed for poultry products like the Nettex Scaly Leg spray (there are probably others too). There are traditional options which are both treatment and prevention, like surgical spirit (not widely recommended now), or vaseline. Then again, you could just keep a watchful eye and use one of the above if you seen any signs of Scaly Leg.
