JanTheDiver
I have had my chickens since 31st August last year, they are all happy hens except they all seem to like feather pecking but I think this is something they live with as I have tried many things to stop it I looked at Lucy tonight and noticed that she has odd eyes. Now she may have always had them but I am not sure if it is something new. She has one, what I call ,normal chicken eye i.e. big pupil light coloured round the edge. Her other eye is exactly the opposite i.e very small pupil with large light edge (looks a bit really). She is a Maran hybrid and is a very nervous chicken who doesn't like being picked up, but I understand that this is the breed. I just wondered if anyone had come across this before and is it anything to worry about, does this mean she is blind in one eye or can't see much out of it? Should I take her to a vet to get it checked. She is eating, drinking and generally being a normal chicken, there is no weeping from the odd eye and it doesn't look sore. Your comments would be appreciated. Thanks Jan
Plum
I understand it can be a sign of neurological disease in chickens but I have no experience. Hope I'm wrong http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marek's_disease
alet_chicken
Hi, not sure if this will be interesting as a comparison, but I recently discovered something similar with one of my chickens, Madge. After scaring myself with the same picture on Wikipedia that Plum linked to, I decided to check through old photos, and it turns out her eye must have been like this for at least a year (...so probably not Marek's, phew). Her left eye, which is normal: Her right eye, the pupil seems smaller in real life than in this photograph: She is nearly two now, and lays regularly, so I doubt it's bothering her. She is extremely flighty, and cries like a baby when picked up. She tends to hang back a little bit when the others scrum for treats, but this may well be because of her relative small size in the flock than her eyesight (plus I have some really pushy ex-batts). I can see no other evidence that her eyesight is bothering her.
