Some advice please

Recommended Posts

hello all,

my ex-batt muggles has a peritonitis 4 weeks ago, vet said it was caught early she was drained and given a course of injections that i was happy to do my self. she returned back to her chicken self i was really pleased.

Anyway at the start of this week i notice she was showing same symptoms again, so off she went to vet who had ago at draining her again but not much came out this time, but vet said as she was still a good colour and quite lively gave her another course of injections for 9 days this time. last time its was 5 day. vet suggested we hit it harder.

she went back to vets wednesday evening, they are avian and reptile experts as well as the usual cat/dog vets.

since the trip vet Muggles isnt doing very well at all her comb has gone quit blue at the ends, poo is bright green and she is just sitting around not really interested in much, but she does still seem to want to eat little bits. she also has a hard lump of food in her crop.

What do i do???, should i give her another chance or maybe call it a day. i love her to bits but i don't want to force something that may not come. as she is an ex-batty i think the chances of her recovering are slim, i also don't want her to be in any pain. but i don't want to loose her either. any advice is appreciated.

Sorry to say this, but if she's been drained twice and it's recurring, there is probably not much else you can do. She's had a happy life that she would have been denied if you hadn't rescued her. It sounds as if you have a very good vet so you could seek their advice, but the stress of trips to the vet has to be weighed against the benefit as well. Best wishes.

I tend to agree with Olly. I have a hybrid with peritonitis that we drained about 4 weeks ago (no antibiotics given). From the moment that she was drained she has behaved like a fit and healthy hen. I fully expect the fluid to reform at some point soon and will only drain again if she can return to a decent period of good health in between drainings. If your girl is unwell in between drainings it does not sound very good at all and you may have to make a rather painful decision regarding her propects of returning to any degree of good health. :(
