bluekarin
I am making my first ever white chardonnay from a wine kit. It was blubbing away merrily for about 8 days when it all of a sudden stopped blupping. I thought it had got to cold as it was near a window which I'd been opening for a while everyday. After reading a bit on the net it may, however, have got too hot! I have shaken it a bit to get the yeast stuff that is at the bottom of the demi john moving. I have filled a hot water bottle up with hot water and put it behind it and have moved the demi john to a more sheltered part of the kitchen. Nadda So any suggestion on what to do? Couperman
Are you sure it hasn't just fermented out a bit quicker than normal and is ready for bottling? I don't think 8 days is uncommon in ideal conditions. I would take a hydrometer reading to see if it is at it's final gravity, if not just whack another sachet of yeast in and set it off again. Edit: this link details how to restart a stuck fermentation, my whack it method may be a bit crude linky dinky Hope this helps. Kev.
bluekarin
Thanks Kev. Thats a useful site. I shall do my vinometer test again (read 15% last time I did it - don't think that's correct though). It doesn't smell musty, which I think it would if it was going off. Also, after reading a page on the link you gave me, I don't think it got too cold, as it just slows right down. I emptied out some of it into a jug and swooshed the remaining stuff around in the bottom and then poured the other liquid back in. It had a few blubs through the air lock, but now nothing. It may, like you said, just be ready extra early!
