a question about feeding different foods to hens

I just took a picture of my OH's progress to date showing the sleepers he has started to put down for the base of our WIR and here it is, doesn't look very good at the moment

 

 

Now when I compare it to a picture of the same part of the garden taken last year it makes it look even more of a mess

 

I'm sure once it's all finished it will look lovely, but I do miss all my shrubs and trees
