Eglu Cube, auto door, walk in run for sale South West London

right, OH is going to build me a WIR, these are the plans so far and if anyone has got any advice/comments/things I've missed please let me know!!

 

12' x 12' square.

8' tall at housing end, sloping to 6' at other end. green onduline roof (matches other outbuildings).

sited on existing decked area, with marine ply or similar covering the deck for easy sweeping/cleaning.

gravel boards or whatever you call them all round to retain wood chip etc.

1 cube and 2 eglus situated outside WIR but sitting on the deck.

pophole with ladder to 12sq m of electric fencing on to grass centre front.

19g weldmesh, 1"x1" on all four sides.

shading/waterproofing: clear tarps on hooks to roll up/down as required on the sides; split reed panels and omlet shades for shade over and above the roof itself.

 

10 chickens in cube; 2 bunnies in rablu - all will have f/r access all day onto grass.

6 quail in 1 eglu and run; another 6 quail in rabbit run inside WIR - obviously NOT freeranging!

 

environmental enrichment, in the form of perches, dustbaths etc etc will be added once the thing is built.

Yes - have that door opening into the run if you can.

I can't tell you the amount of times I have had to tackle an escaping hen when we had a pull out opening door

Sounds like a palace!

Make the door a barn door - 2/3rds top, 1/3 bottom so you can just open the top half, step over the bottom and you don't have chooks escaping.

 

If you want to collect the rainwater, fit guttering before you slide it into place.

 

Make sure you have lots of roof struts to support it - any sags will soon show in the snow.

 

I had 1" by 1/2" weldmesh - I'm sure others will confirm if I'm overkill and yours is fine

useful stuff there, I like the idea of the door that you can step over the bottom 3rd of.

also inward opening and some kind of way of being sure to get out again once I've shut myself in.

concluded 1x1 weldmesh because someone on here said it looked nicer and was still safe.

well, it's now under construction - darling OH has phoned to say he has made 2 of the 4 sides today... I've bought him a copy of Autosport as a treat (!!). We have decided on outwards opening door, because we will have to step UP to get in because it's going on the deck which is already about 12-18" off the ground. I may regret this, but his argument was that it would be harder for Mr. Fox to pull something open than push it open.

if the kids hadnt lost the sd card from my camera, I would post before, during and after pix... off for a major tidy up this afternoon and attempt to find the *&^% thing!!
