dirty bum

Recommended Posts

yesterday 1 of my girls layed an egg which had blood on it  . Today i noticed her bottom was dirty looking and had a little blood stain on feathers but also had white stuff which looked liked pooh sort of dripping out slowly. She isn't her usual self either. I did wonder if she could be struggling to pass an egg? any ideas???

thanks

Often when they have had a spot of bother laying, they ooze a bit of the lubricating fluid which coats the egg. It may settle, but I'd keep an eye on it as occasionally it can be a sign of an infection.

Keep her knickers clean, and if she is still having trouble in a day or two,it would be an idea to have a chat with your vet.

it might be worth checking that she hasn't got a partial prolapse, when this happened to my White Star, she had poo coming out around the edges of it. If you have warm dry weather where you are you could give her a little shallow warm bath in a bowl and maybe give her knickers trim so that they don't get resoiled. I have a Light Sussex who is prone to dirty fluff and we have to keep her clean and trim the feathers back. I worry about fly strike. She is in otherwise lovely condition and lays regularly and has been like this for a couple of years now.
