Muggle's got sourcrop - I think it's now Pendulous Crop

Recommended Posts

Further update.

Muggle went back to see the vet today. Lesley was actually quite pleased with the size of her crop as it has shrunk quite alot. She may always have a slightly stretched onefrom now on though. The vet has given her some more antibiotics to continue the course as she feels we might be winning. She's also on a course of poultry nutri drops and is having Avipro in her water. The vet has also added a small daily dose of Metacam, to reduce any remaining inflammation and, hopefully, stimulate her appetite.

That said, Muggle has come home to a tasty brunch of pureed sweetcorn with added live maggots, which she seems to be enjoying. I will continue to post updates, as and when.

I also sadly lost an early girl, I wish I had been brave enough to empty her more she might have stood a fighting chance then.

I successfully since used FO Sulphur with Live plain yog and apples.

Also added extra citricidal to the water, and little bokashi if she will eat it.

If you get to the vet really push for Oral Nystatin, if they don't have it, ask for a prescription for it, you can get it from a chemist.

Wish you ALL the very best. (hugs)

I thought it was about time I gave another update. The good news is that Muggle's sourcrop does seem much better as such. She's still on the Baytril and Metacam though.

However, the main problem is that she is being a really picky miss where food is concerned. The only things she wants to eat at present is: live maggots, dried mealworms, cut up grapes and mixed corn and the odd grain of rice.

She won't touch porridge, yogurt, pureed sweetcorn, mashed potato, pasta, grated apple, chick crumbs, layers pellets.

Any ideas?

can you try and get your vet to give you or give you a prescription for some oral nystatin?

that appears to be "the" treatment for sour crop.

I would just be happy she is eating something TBH. Is she pooing ok?

Just re read and if she is eating mixed corn I really would be happy, you kow that is the main diet that some people give their girls?

glad she seems to be improving

Thanks for the reply sh3c. Much appreciated. :D

My chicken vet really hates Nystatin as she says it has very nasty side effects, so despite me asking twice she really didn't want Muggle to have it.

At last, Muggle does seem much better and her crop, whilst still a bit saggy, is now emptying by the morning. To be graphic, she actually did a semi-solid poo this morning, which indicates that the food she is eating is getting all the way through her system. I now think her sourcrop was bacterial rather than fungal, so maybe the vet was right (on this occasion) not to give Nystatin. That said, I had to really plead for the Metacam and I am convinced that is what has helped her turn the corner.

It's reassuring that you say she is OK to have mixed corn ( I usually only give this to my girls once or twice a week as a treat) as she studiously avoids the layers pellets and chick crumbs I try to hide amongst it. Who says chickens are dim?

Off to buy more live maggots, which she loves. Spoilt chicken!!!

Update on the ongoing saga of Muggle and her sourcrop episode. She has finished 4 weeks of antibiotics and 3 weeks of Metacam. I am now convinced that any sourcrop she had has been well and truly knocked on the head. However, her crop is still enlarged and fills up/deflates a bit/fills up again. I think we have to accept that Muggle now has Pendulous Crop. She (and we) will have to learn to live with it. She seems happy and otherwise healthy and is doing normal chickeny things, so I am going to adopt the "let her get on with it but monitor closely" approach.

I did find a bit of encouraging news on one of the poultry forums.

I have a Bluebelle who over stretched her crop by eating too much, she also drinks a lot more than the other chooks. I emptied her crop a few times in the past but don't now, it has been like this for almost 3 years now and she is fine - eats, drinks and lays ok - sometimes it goes down on its own but it will always be big.

Wish us luck!
