Chickendoodle
Got to the stage with our chickens where we had 5 chickens and we were lucky to get 1 egg a day in total. We have 3 who are over 2 years old so are nearing retirement and 2 who are 1 year old so should be at their peak. We have the space so decided to get 3 more POL chooks as I couldn't bear the thought of having to buy eggs again. Got the new ones on Friday, one of them started laying straight away and guess what - we are now getting 3 eggs a day from the other girls as well. Is this because they feel threatened do you think or don't they want to be outdone by a bunch of new girls? Whatever the reason we are very happy with the unexpected result. Soon be having to give the eggs away again!

cavysqueak
Brilliant news! I know what you mean about buying eggs - we had to buy some recently and it felt completely wrong! Not sure why - very odd.
Seagazer
I did that as I was getting only 1 or 2 out of my 3 girls and sometimes none at all (they are 2 and a half). Bought 2 new girls in and suddenly I'm getting 5 a day - my neighbours have been very pleased with my surplus eggs. Things are slowing back down again now, I don't mind, I can cope with 3 eggs a day. I think they must think they'd better pull their socks up or else.
littlehenny
The same happened to me when we added 2 new girls to our existing and . Didn't last long though Still our new Warrens supply two eggs a day which is enough for us, and occasionally for our neighbours
Mollie333
Same thing happened. We was getting one egg a day from 12 chooks, 2 turned out to be cockerels, 4 chicks, 2 Warrens(Don't know why they didn't lay..) One pekin which was laying and my other Pekin which is broody with four chicks. So of i went to buy some new hens. Not ideal but i brought one Pekin hen that was already laying and then a frizzle who is too young. So i put the Pekin in with the Hybrids, and she laid an egg, so did the Hybrids!
