Bramble
How do you guys all know which hen has laid which egg? I'm guessing that different "types" lay different coloured eggs? But I've got three ex-batts who are "all the same" so is it just a case of watching who goes into the nest box and checking for eggs when they come out (difficult, as i'm at work all day!) Also, I've had my girls for three weeks and am THRILLED to say that I'm getting two eggs most days now, I was just wondering if it's likely to be the same two girls laying everyday, or whether they are all laying but not every day? There tends to be one "average" size egg and one much bigger, is it necessarily the case of "the bigger the hen the bigger the egg"? It's not remotely important really, they are pets and the eggs are a bonus, I'm just curious!!!
Daphne
I think the only way is to observe, perhaps at the weekend? Certainly hen size need bear no relation to egg size. Well done on giving your girls a new lease of life - they are obviously happy
majuka
Our first ex-batts we could tell the difference but only after a weekend of sitting and watching each one go into the nest box and then looking at the eggs. Veronica's were huge, no mistaking them. Clarissa's were slightly paler than the others (she was slightly different in her apperance). Matilda and Henrietta had very similar eggs, they were more difficult to tell apart. Matilda retired from laying quite early on though so we could work out easily then which ones were from which hen.
