Impacted Crop

Recommended Posts

I think one of ex-batts has an impacted crop as it feels hard and appears noticably enlarged. Does the olive oil treatment work and if so how much should I give her?

I'm wondering whether to try the treatment myself or just get her straight off to the vets this evening? I'd be really grateful to hear from anyone who's been in this situation, it's really worrying!

Thanks for the advice!

Is there any particular oil thats better to treat it? I have olive oil and sunflower oil, not sure which to use?? Also I read somewhere that it should be gently warmed, is that correct? Hope this works, really dont like the idea of having to feed her maggots, but then I would do anything for my ladies! :x

I'm off to the vets now to get a syringe, can't think of anywhere else to get one from!

Thanks Chook n Boo Mum!

Tried 1ml of olive oil last night and she seemed brighter this morning. Her crop definitely looks smaller, about golf ball sized. She's pooing which I think must be a good sign, spose it means things are moving through. She's still not herself though, not chasing me round the garden like she normally does.

Should I try the olive oil/ massage again later do you think?

I gave an oil massage morning & evening when my Buffie was in trouble, and fed her maggots regularly during the day, alongside her pellets or mash porridge, stewed apples, yoghurt & plenty of fluids.

I believe, though I could be wrong, that if the mass is broken up by the gently massage, the maggots can get to anything which may be causing a blockage and remove it by whatever means :vom: , and even if not, they are a source of protein which has to be a benefit to a poorly girl :anxious: .and yes pooing is a good sign in my book :D

Please be gentle when massaging, as she may have grit in her crop & scratches followed by more problems could be caused when rubbing..also the crop is easily stretched as there is no muscle around the outside to hold it in....I found that Buffie seemed to be more susceptible to IC after her first bout........ :(

I hope she continues to improve

Thanks Sha. I'll try the oil and massagee again this evening. We have an Angling store just down the road that should be a good place to get a supply of maggots. :vom: You mentioned natural yoghurt, I've never given it to my chooks before. How do you serve it and how much do you give them?

I usually mix natural yoghurt with bokashi bran as the latter contains probiotics (?) which help with whatever's going on in the crop.....my girls wolf it down whether they are poorly or not  I mix enough together to make a sloppy paste....depends how many I'm feeding as to quantities........start her with a tablespoon or so of yoghurt & bokashi to thicken it up to sloppy porridge consistency.

Re the maggots, I always get the white version rather than the dyed ones...not sure if the colourings are good or bad for chooks, but if coloured are the only ones you can get I'd get them :vom: ....just be sure they are all eaten, they hatch out into nasty horrid big beasty flies if they escape & incubate....says she with a shudder of experience :vom:

Thanks Sha you're being super helpful!

Well that's my saturday sorted out then; a trip to Sainsbury's for some natural yoghurt and then off to Stapeley Water Gardens to buy some Maggots! Yum! My girls are in for a treat tomorrow...but I am not! :vom:

Hehe...as i'm typing just looked out of the window and saw Dora chasing a partridge around the paddock! haha! Naughty Chooks!

Bought some very yummy organic natural yoghurt from M&S (which I may end up finishing myself it smells so nice!). Mixed it up with a sprinkling of bokashi and voila! Gobble, gobble, gobble! Haven't tried the maggots yet...want to see what effect the bokashi surprise has first! She loved it anyway!
