worried new chicken owner

Recommended Posts

I am probably worrying about nothing but here goes - My two chickens laid their first eggs today (I have had them three weeks) and one of them is now very lethargic and off her food, even her treats. Usually she runs to me for her meal worms but wouldn't even look at them today. Is it just the fact that laying her first egg has tired her out or should I be looking for other signs of illness?

This is the first time I have used this site so please forgive the lack of pictures or cartoons.

Many thanks

Joan :(

It may well be related to laying her first egg. Often they lay soft (shell-less) eggs in the first few days of laying, and she may have one of these waiting in the wings. They make them feel very off it until the egg is out. Perhaps this is what is happening. All you can do is observe really at this stage.

Thank you for that advice. It seems you were right because about two hours ago I found her and the other chicken eating what looked like the remains of an egg and I also found the soft shell. By the way their names are Jessie and Maud.

Thanks again. :D
