Guest
Ok so I have been hearing about prolapses. How do they happen ? And if it happens what do I do to sort it out. I am getting rather worried because I have seen pictures and I don't do well in situations with body parts out the body I just get stressed and panic. Olly
Rhys, take a look in the FAQs under 'Poultry Health' -there's a section on prolapses there.
Plum
It's good to read up just in case but you can always come and ask on here if it happens.

Plum
In that case I will tell you because you really need a bit of an idea and act quick. If one prolapses take it away from others so it doesn't get pecked. Clean it with some water and with the flat of your hand apply gentle pressure to try and replace it. If you get it in before it swells you have a better outcome. Holding your chicken on her back and gravity helps. If it swells get swelling down with either heamorrhoid cream or sprinkle sugar on it. Then with clean gloved finger just feel inside and ease it into place. You may have to keep trying. If its bleeding or pecked or been out a while get to vet for antibiotic cover and advice. Hope it never happens Rhys, but if you can make a start then come and ask its easier.
patsylabrador
It's really good to have that plan of action in your mind, then you will find a part of your brain takes over that helps you deal with a crisis. O read all the gory stuff so that hopefully I can be practical when its necessary.
