How can you tell if a chicken is getting old?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Nutmeg is a gingernut ranger and is 4.5 years old.

How do I know if she is unwell or just showing signs of aging? It's easy with us humans, (I've started making involuntary sounds every time I stand up or sit down). Nutmeg still shows keenness when I go to let her out of the run but after a few minutes she just goes and hides under a bush.

Does this sound like old age? Should I make her watch Antiques Roadshow tonight and gauge her reaction :?:

If she is still eating, drinking, pooing and generally pottering about without obvious signs of respiratory, crop, lice/mites/worm or egg-laying related problems (if she is still laying) I wouldn't be too worried. She's a good age for a hybrid.

Sounds like she is doing very well. 4.5 is a good age for a gingernut - most people I have spoken too have lost theirs at 2.5 (I lost 3 at that age). I find they do start to slow down gradually and seem to be resting a lot more and lose a bit of weight. My pepperpot is going through the same now, she is 5 1/2!
