madchickenlady
I am going to sell my silkies, and am considering wyandotte bantams as a replacement. The rest of my small flock are pekins, so how do they compare size/character wise? My pekins are friendly, tame, sociable birds and do no real damage to my garden (the silkies are the opposite on all counts ) I really love the blue laced wyandotte's plumage, but am a bit cautious about straying from my beloved pekins Any help appreciated
The Dogmother
I usually have at least a couple of 'dottes in my lot. Like other banties and minis, they can vary in size within the breed, but are generally taller and a bit bigger than your average pekin. Here's a photo of two of my old 'dottes with a young pekin; the pekin is only about 16 weeks old in this photo and was never very big whe she grew up. Wyandottes are hardy birds, easy to look after, less inclined to go broody than pekins and don't have so many dirty feet related problems
madchickenlady
Thanks Claret The pic is very helpful! Hmm, not sure whether to stick with the pekins or not I do adore the blue laced wyandotte's colouring, but I've never seen one in the flesh, so to speak. Might have to go a-hunting.... Redwing
I breed and show Wyandotte bantams They will do damage to your garden - not as much as a large fowl but more than a Pekin in general They are however easy going, calm and friendly birds and a great addition to a flock

Roobaloo
If I'm ever in a position to introduce some new hens, these gorgeous ladies are top of my list!! I was gutted, Just after I bought some cream legbar hatching eggs and set them in the incy, a work colleague who lives in the same village said "Oh, I didn't know you were into poultry!! I have some fertile silver laced wyandotte bantam eggs if you want them!"
Mollie333
I brought Alice, the cockerel, as a girl. He is quite quiet and doesn't do that much damage to the garden. He is beautiful, but will be going to Tom soon, hes such a character and will be missed. Hoping to hatch some maybe next May. They are stunning. Alice.
