Henhathnofury
Firstly, I am Henhathnofury - but because I haven't posted for a very long time, the Omlet board wouldn't recognise my user name and/or email address. If anyone can revert me to my original name, or tell me how to login - that would be chickentastic! I have become a little obsessed with getting some Australorps...they look so very gorgeous. Has anyone got any and what are they like? Also - any idea of where we can get some...all research seems to suggest they are scarce. We live near Reading but will travel! Good to be back on here. We have two chickens left now after a prolapse and old age took our darling Omlet girls over several years, but the itch for more begins! quickcluck
My friend has one!!!! She is a lovely girl and huge, the size of a Orp. She is top chook but not aggressive in any way, very nosey and a lovely temperament
meezers
hi, I have an Australorp - Ozzy ( very original ) she's lovely, one of my favourites. Top chook out of the new girls, about the size of a light sussex and similar temperament. She's black with a lovely beetle green sheen . Lays about 4 eggs a week, occasionally 5 , sometimes 2 not the most reliable of layers ! I got mine from a place in Gloucestershire, nr Tewksbury I think, not sure if that's too far for you to travel.
Henhathnofury
'She is a lovely girl and huge, the size of a Orp.' I do hope you mean the chicken and not your friend! Oooh Herefordshire and Gloucestershire...I used to live in Hereford so I know the area well. I think they sound so lovely and you have convinced me. Now to source one! Could I have the name of the suppliers in Gloucestershire? Thank both. Getting a bit excited now!

amateurkeeper
We have an australorp chick who is now 5 weeks old and nearly fully feathered - and there seems to be a trend here because she's also top chook!
Henhathnofury
Thanks Meezers - but none available until March! I can't wait! Another place had their chicks killed by foxes. I seem doomed! I wish someone could hatch an egg or two for me. We need a surrogate chicken service!

Henhathnofury
Fantastic website - lovely idea. But still remains the sticky problem of cockerels. How early can you sex 'em? Too much of a wimp to cull them, I'm afraid....
WitchHazel
Australorps are gorgeous: very big, black-with-sheen, gorgeous eyes, very gentle birds. I hatched mine from eggs supplied by castlefarmeggs.co.uk. He may have Australorps available, but I know he is often oversubscribed.
meezers
I was going to suggest Castlefarm , he's in Herefordshire as well, but I rang him when I was looking for mine and he told me they only do hatching eggs. Maybe as it's the end of hatching season he'll have a few unwanteds knocking about , good luck.

It used to be Brad Pitt you know. isn't it always the way, when you want a hen you can't get hold of, it turns into a mission that takes over your life ( or is that just me ? )

lougarbard
Lots for sale here! http://www.omlet.co.uk/breeds/breeds.php?breed_type=Chickens&breed=Australorps
cooperbro
Definately 2 hens and 1 cock, not sure about 4th yet as its a bit runtier than the others but money would be on another hen. Australorpes seem to follow the two week old rules. Hens longer wing feathers, shoulder feathers and crop feathers. Cocks shorter wings, no crop or shoulder feathers at two weeks old. I have found you can sex Faverolles this way too!
Janty
I know a breeder of LF and miniatures but it's in Suffolk. My Ebony came from there. She's nutty. Bashes into me when she isn't getting enough attention and shouts at me for snuggles. If I pick her up and carry her round she's fine. I also know another breeder who had miniature blue Australorps.
