Egluntyne
Him Indoors has just thought to inform me that for the past 2 mornings (5ish) that there has been a fox sniffing around in the garden. I'm now wondering if it isn't a rat that is digging after all! Although the tunnels are rat sized and deepish......and I doubt the fox would be nimble fingered enough to remove the bait from the rat traps without setting them off. Have put a new set of traps down today with little recesses for the peanut butter....so here's hoping.
Gallina
Or you may be lucky like me and have both rats and foxes....

Lynn in Bristol
Get a burmese cat! Ours regularly brings in rats, though it does cost us a fortune in vets bills as we have to have him injected with antibiotics at least twice a year when he gets badly bitten. But of course its our fault for having chickens, which apparently attract rats. Nothing at all to do with the fact that we only have refuse collections fortnightly and that some of the morons who live in our area haven't got to grips with the concept of recycling, and leave their bins overflowing.....etc. etc. (sorry, sore point)
