New dog

Recommended Posts

We got a 7 month old Huskamute today, he seems really freindly and well behaved. He gets on fine with my Lab Buzz but GSD Keira doesn't like him much. hopoefully in a few days they will all be freinds. Does anyone else have experience of Huskamutes. :)

My friend has Malamutes and she races them with a sled on wheels. Obviously they're quite adept at pulling and she does have quite a difficult time if they're on a lead. As you'll no doubt be aware they've got quite a large jump capacity, one of the dogs jumped out of a first floor window she presumes just because it was able to look out and noticed something he fancied chasing! Remarkably, the dog was fine as it jumped onto an upwards sloping rear garden and land in some shrubs which were not fine. Her dogs have fantastic natures and are very striking especially when you see them in action. Good luck and enjoy your new dog.

I worked in an animal rescue for many years and we often had a lot of huskamutes in which is very sad as they are lovely dogs. One thing about them is that they often have terrible recall so I would definatly try to teach that as soon as you can as they often spend their whole life on the lead. As Becka says they are born to pull! There is a man who lives near me who excercises his huskamute by biking with him. You often see him pulling his owner down the cycle tracks!

Good luck with your new addition !

Thanks for your replies.

I've heard about them not having good recall so we will be doing plenty of recall practice before he goes off lead. Its a shame so many end up in rescues, I think people see a cute fluffy puppy and buy it without thinking what it will grow into and the commitment it will need.

At least Keira has stopped trying to kill him now [ they were introduced with her wearing a muzzle] and she has a new best freind. Keira is only two so hopefully they will carry on playing together. All we need now is for Ozzy [new dog] to settle at night, have hasd three night with no sleep so glad its the weekend. :)
