chooklady
My daugther found Bramble in the run Friday night when she went to shut the run for the night she was just sitting on the ground, she doesn't seem able to bear any weight on her legs. She spent yesterday in the run with the others and she laid an egg, poor thing. But she just shuffled around a bit. She can clutch things with her toes but one of hers legs trembles. She spent last night in a box in the garage. When she's sitting on the floor she is using her wings to balance herself. she has been eating and drinking, any suggestions? We have had a lice problem and they are all a bit moth eaten at the moment and Bramble was probably the worst affected so I'm wondering if there may be a connection. Thanks for reading this Edited September 7, 2010 by Guest
Plum
Poor Bramble. I don't know what it could be. If her claw grip is strong it's probably not neurological. The legs can be affected if an egg presses on a nerve but you say she laid. Perhaps she is weak due to illness but then you say she is eating and drinking. Has she lost weight? Can you feel around the breast bone? Do you think you might have a red mite problem or other parasite that has weakened her Hope she picks up by morning
chooklady
she's a bit brighter today, I'm keeping her inside, the wind is a bit cool this morning. She's drinking and eating but still not standing, she goes over on her side a bit and then she changes to the other side, she is alert and her comb isn't hot, what a dilema! We have had a major lice problem but we are in the process of sorting that out, but she was the worst affeacted.
chooklady
Bramble has shown no signs of improvement today, although she has still been drinking and eating. She still couldn't stand. We took her to the vets tonight and saw a really lovely young man vet. He examined her leg and thinks it was probably due to some kind of trauma most likely her hip joint or some neurological problem, most likely the first. We had come to the conclusion ourselves that she had more than likely fallen down the steps of the cube as we found her on the ground below. Speckles is top hen and she always sits in the doorway so maybe Bramble felt a bit intimidated by her as she was feeling unwell anyway. Anyway we left Bramble in his capable hands to be put to sleep, she had struggled enough over the last 4 days. She had been the worst affected by the lice aswell so maybe it is a happy release for her. RIP Bramble 7/9/
