daxigirl
Morning Chicken Keepers, Can some knowledgeable person tell me what the difference is between Light and White Sussex or are they the same thing? Also what colour egg do they lay & would the reverse Sussex lay the same colour egg? Just wondering for when I get my and feel the need to fill it a bit more. (Making my I want list in readiness.) Any ideas on favourite breeds welcomed. I would like a black, a and a dark brown egg layer. Cheers
chicken bark
I have a light sussex and she lays brown eggs. Not come across a white sussex though. I think Buff Sussex are lovely. For dark brown egg layers you'll be after a Marans or a Welsummer.
beach chick
legbars lay lovely white eggs and they are cool chickens too. I have a silver sussex and a white/light sussex at the mo - I'm not sure of the light/white difference either, but Fairy is mostly white with black speckles here and there. she reminds me of a seagull if that helps at all! alet_chicken
Hi, here is a picture of a light Sussex: A white Sussex is completely white, and Wikipedia reckons they are very rare. My light Sussex laid brown eggs. Copper black Marans are black (or as near as can be) and lay very dark eggs.
beach chick
Fairy's a light sussex then - thanks for that photo! re the marans, you need to check with the breeder I think to make sure that his strain do actually lay dark brown eggs and will continue to do so. our (now deceased marans) started off with lovely little dark brown golf ball sized eggs, but as she got older they became bigger and paler. Spot, the speckledy, is also meant to lay dark(er) brown eggs - speckledys having some marans in their ancestry - but no evidence of this so far! Jools
Light Sussex have dark hackles laced with white and dark tail feathers, while White Sussex are all white See this website for some good photos. I've recently got into Sussex bantams, most of mine are Silver Sussex but I do have one Light Sussex hen. Mine are all great layers of slightly tinted eggs and they make fabulous broodies too. beach chick
sussexes are generally rather lovely I think! very good chooks, apparently they are 'utility' and therefore both good for (hush) meat and eggs. they do go broody sometimes, but not as bad as others (eg silkies). Jools
Don't you believe it, mine a broody monsters! Great if you want a broody, but chucking them out of the nest box every couple of weeks gets a bit wearing lol. They are a great breed though
