When can they have layers pellets?

Recommended Posts

What breeds are they. They can go on layers now but i have kept mine on growers until they actually lay. But some of mine are huge brahmas and orps and so have a lot of growing to do. Keeping them on growers for longer will not do them any harm at all but putting them on layers could make them come into lay too soon. I know others do it differently but if your not in any rush for eggs i think its better to keep them on growers for longer rather than shorter if that makes sense?

Thanks for your advice. :) The problem is that all my chooks have to eat the same stuff as they go to each others' food and I'm not keen on my layers eating growers pellets for too long as I am concerned that it might affect their egg laying although they have been laying well so far.

Dont worry about your layers, they will still lay, it may drop a little but the extra nutrients in the growers will do them good anyway. My older girls were eating the younger ones growers cos they love them and it didnt affect the egg production too much.

Having said that, as long as your new girls arnt huge like brahmas etc they should be ok on layers.

I think i may be a bit on the cautious side as i got a CLB at pol who was on layers when i got her and she prolapsed before she laid her first egg and had to pts :( My new chicks which i hatched myself i have kept on growers for longer just to give them a good start. They are now 23 and 27 weeks old and have only just last week been put on layers permanently and a few of them started laying before they even started on layers! :D
