squidsin
Not buying a new one - that would be the legendary gold chicken of, um, legend that I've just made up - but on fixing up an existing one. After rashly posting about how happy I was that none of my pekins are broody for once, my Nugget's face promptly swelled up to twice its existing size, and off we went to the vet. She's got a massive abscess and is currently having an op to have it drained, the cost of which has also left ME drained, financially and emotionally! My family think I am mad spending that much on her, but it was that or leave her in pain or have her PTS and I couldn't, just couldn't, do either. So now I am completely skint! Sympathy please...... Dolly
Poor Nugget, and you! I hope she recovers soon. If it makes you feel any better, we spent £160 on Roxy when she badly injured her beak and if you include the additional £260 I spent on another Eglu for her to recuperate in, you could say I'm nuts about my girls too (and skint)! My DH wants me to sell the 'spare' eglu now she's better but he's having trouble getting me to part with it!

chick wiggle
Wow! squidsin
Thanks everyone! If anyone knows any cheapish vets in roughly the West London area, let me know! I think living in London and paying London prices has helped make a big hole in my bank account here! Also - can you get pet insurance for chooks? Redwing
Sadly chickens are classed as exotic pets in insurance world (mainly because they dont really fit in any category) so although yes you can get insurance its is extremely expensive Its worth putting a little aside each month in case of problems
Bexibex
I would have spent it too - I just never tell my other half the real cost! That's the beauty of keeping my bank account separate!
squidsin
I told my OH. He made me swear not to tell anyone! But revealing it on a poultry forum, amongst sympathisers, doesn't count, right?
the bradley bunch
*sympathy hugs* for you & poor little nugget i wish her a speedy recovery from the op...and also think you deserve a medal for being such a good chicken mummy (and your hubby too if he doesn't mind the label! *Lol* ) what a horrible decision to have to make, but i fully support what you did, to leave her in pain or have her pts are both terrible alternatives so i think you made the right choice...not just for nugget but for you too, you clearly hold her very close to heart and i think it would've pained you just as much to let her suffer or to lose her. ps. 'let go of the eglu - now!' ...
