Long term egg planning - do you buy newbies every year?

Recommended Posts

My omlet girls (2 remaining, 1 RIP) have stopped laying about 4 months ago (they are 2 1/2) and I have bought 2 fenton blues a month ago that are still not laying. We have been without eggs for a while now and I HATE buying them! What do people do to keep production going? I have just ordered a purple cube to be able to keep even more - do I buy POL's now or leave it a while? Do people buy newbies every year? I guess I never really 'planned' for non stop eggs but do not want a drought ever again!!

I know ... the shame of having to BUY eggs! I've tried to have a couple of new hens every year, but unless you have a lot of room it doesn't always work out like that, as they don't all oblige you by laying for a set period or by departing this life in strict order of age.

At the moment I have a 3 yr old, a 2 yr old and two purchased at POL in February this year. The 3 yr old (Speckledy) lays more regularly than one of the youngsters! I had an egg drought from November to February last year though, as at that time I had a retired Gingernut and the other two weren't laying at all in the shorter days; I'm hoping the two new ones will see me through the winter, but there's no guarantee. You'll just have to keep buying more hens!

Two of my three ex-bats are the most regular of my lot. 2 lovely BIG brown eggs every morning by 9.30! And what is so nice, each one hops out of the cube so happily to get on with some nice free ranging for the rest of the day. Such a change to their former life.

The others are pure breeds so slowling signficantly now. I'm getting three more ex-bats on Sunday so maybe they will take us over the winter drought. But if they don't, they'll still be happier than in their previous life.
