mouthybird
Help! Really worried about my young hen. On Monday she laid her first egg. It got stuck half way out of her vent, she pent several hours straining to push it out & eventually I separated her from the other hens (who'd started to peck her) and gently wiggled the egg free. Yesterday (Tuesday) I spotted her straining again & being pecked by the other hens. Once again, I separated her, but this time there was no sign of an egg. I put her in a cage with food and water, gave her a warm bath to try and assist her lay, and put my tumble dryer on to steam up her environment. By bed time she still hadn't laid. This evening she's still in the cage & straining in earnest. I've bathed her again and put vaseline around/in her vent. My real concern is that every time she strains she looks as though she's almost prolapsing, and it's close to 48 hours since she first started to struggle. Is there anything more I can do to help her lay?
Christian
She really needs to be seen by a vet to be honest. They will be able to help.
mouthybird
Sadly we lost her this morning. She had egg peritonitis. Feeling a bit blue now, but consoled by the fact that we didn't let her suffer for too long & there was nothing we could have done differently - she just wasn't right inside. RIP lovely chucky.
