I will take a proper measurement tomorrow and maybe a photo. Maj is being kept in an ark I bought with an old hedgehog house nailed to it. The hedgehog house seems perfect for her and she has a lot of room inside. I am just fretting about the ark. I bought it for £37 and now I am wondering if it is money wasted.

The ark is fairly small which I guess is fine because she is recooperating. I just wanted to have people's opinions about the height. She can stand up fine and everything towards the middle (the ark of course is that /\ shape) but she does not have room to crane her neck the way chickens do when they are feeling curious. Would it be cruel to not get another ark?

Eventually when Maj is better and returns to the WIR I am thinking about rehoming 2 ex bat chickens and would need to use this ark for them for a few weeks.

Opinions would be greatly appreciated. I know my family will moan, especially as I've spent a lot of money on the ark already but I wouldnt want Maj or the potential new chickens to be uncomfortable.

thanks again guys

thanks for your quick reply :) I'll post a photo tomorrow and try and find a measuring tape. But I think you're right with regards to the next chooks. Do you have any ideas of better temp accomodation? in dire need of inspiration! I'm looking at pictures on the internet and most seem to house rabbits. I'm looking for bigger arks on ebay but they are so expensive. I put up an ad on freecycle a few weeks ago for a spare rabbit run and hutch but have had no response.

Maj is having time free-ranging with her sister each day but for the long term I wouldnt want to keep her in the ark too long.

searching on internet- this seems within budget but not sure about the 'house' http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/8620657.htm

That run would be ok as a sick bay but no more. The house bit isnt suitable at all as you suspect

Someone on another forum did a clever trick where they got an unsuitable ark and added a bottom section to it which made the whole space a lot bigger and raised the house bit off the ground - imagine your ark on stilts which followed the slope of the sides and with mesh round the bottom - does that make sense? it would cost less to convert the ark you have than buy something else cheap and unsuitable

thanks for your help RedWing :) I'm going to show that pic to my mum, maybe she is up for some DIY. Really kicking myself now for buying that ark, it was a bit of a mad dash to the local precinct and I just looked at a picture in a book and picked it. Duhh.

Completely understand about the argos house bit but can I just ask why the argos run is only suitable as a sickbay and nothing more? Not sure if I'm being dense on that one. Thanks again :)

ooh you are a star! i love the little heartshaped latch too. it does look perfect and the price isn't too bad considering the others are 150+ ... would the height definitely be suitable for a chicken? I keep getting fooled I think by some advertisements that seem to just be for tiny bantams.
