Cockerel 'left in wheelie bin'

A distressed cockerel has been found trapped in a wheelie bin – in an apparent copycat of the attack on dumped cat Lola.

The bird, named Freddie, was scooped out of the large container outside a block of flats in Barnwood, Gloucester, on Tuesday.

It is believed the cockerel had been left out for collection – but he was rescued before binmen arrived. It is not known how long he was trapped inside. ...

Josie Oak, an RSPCA inspector, said: ''I am disgusted that someone has placed a living animal inside a wheelie bin and am keen to hear from anyone who knows who was responsible.''

Local councillor Phil McLellan added: ''It's pretty appalling that someone could dump a live bird in a bin like that.

''I hope the person responsible can be caught and we can find out how and why this happened.''

The bird is now recovering at an RSPCA-approved boarding kennels until his future is decided.

Anyone with information can call the RSPCA on 0300 1234 555.

To be fair, it sounds like someone pushed to the edge of their sanity by the cockerel crowing and trying to make their point in a passive aggressive way. If it was near a block of flats, no one will ever find out who it was... But I'd check with the shift workers first.

:notalk: oh poor freddie. he looks like such a beauty as well :( . i hope he's getting lots of tlc to help him recover from what he's been through, although his fate would have been much worse if he hadn't been discovered before the binmen arrived  . i'm also glad to read that mary bale (who shocked the world when she pushed lola the cat into a wheelie bin) has been charged with 2 animal cruelty offences...lets just hope that her sentancing reflects the suffering she deliberatley inflicted on a completely innocent being.

on a positive note i think society's reaction to acts like this is evidence of just how far animal rights have come, and how people are showing much more awareness of & empathy towards the feelings & emotions animals have.

thanks for alerting us of this rachel,

lets just hope they find the person who did this to freddie the cockeral

This happened just around the corner from our house - its been in the local paper and people haven't been very sympathetic. It was bin collection day and the poor thing could easily have been killed. Most people locally seem to think its acceptable because its a cockerel involved. I expect it was just yobs messing around but the poor creature looks so pathetic in the pictures its just cruel. The RSPCA have said that its chances of survival depend on how long he was without water.

oh no, i hope he's ok  i can't believe that the local community could be so heartless...here's me thinking we were making some progress

yep, with this and the Happy Egg Co story, British Egg week is off to a pretty depressing start :(

you should re-home him emma and get him one of those big pink egg houses to live in! :D much nicer than a wheelie bin :x

support for your badge! 8) ...there's a rescue centre up the road (meant to be for wildlife) and they have lovingly taken in over 30 cockerals. our big garden & lovely ladies would make the perfect home for a few of those boys, but i know someone's guaranteed to pull a 'victor meldrew' over it and they'd just end up back at the centre
