Chicken puffed up, big moult but now can't walk ...

Recommended Posts

Am off to the vet later today with Beowulf, large grey chicken but just wondered if anyone else had any suggestions in the mean time. Beowulf has been a bit off colour for just over a week - standing around a bit puffed up and looking miserable but still eating, albeit not enthusiastically. She started moulting just after looking moody and has lost loads of feathers. I thought she was just off colour because of the moult. Just for good measure I started a Flubenvet course last Saturday. Last night she went up to bed fairly early and didn't come down today. I had to rush off this morning and when I came back at lunchtime she was still in the Eglu. She can hardly walk today and it looks like one of her wings is hanging down (although this could be for balance?). She's just lying under the tree looking around but she looks very thin and miserable. She is nearly three years old. I am worried as I lost another of my 3-year old chickens last week with undiagnosed illness. Could this be co-incidence do you think? Any suggestions as to what could be wrong would be greatly appreciated! Am worried that they may have something nasty which will pass to my other girls. Many thanks to all x

Thank you all for comments. The vet wasn't our usual chicken friendly vet unfortunately, and she was at a bit of a loss too. Anyway, of course Beowulf did seem marginally better when I got her there - ie she stood up and walked with just a bit of a limp. She has been given an anti-inflammatory injection and baytril as her temperature was a little high. She's tucked up now in the house having had a little to eat and drink and we'll see how she is tomorrow. Thanks again for your comments x
