Hi,

Hope someone can advise on one of our little un's. She's about 16 weeks now and we have had her since she was 6 weeks, was treated for Cocci early on as her pen mate had it when they were still indoors.

 

Been outdoors in seperate eglu from the big girls for about 6 weeks but recently has been listless with tail down and not as much growth as the other although seemed to be eating and drinking fine, waited until they were 12 weeks and wormed them with Flubenvet, after which they have been allowed out for limited periods and only very recently with the big girls.

 

Last night she went to bed very early (4.30) but didn't think much of it as it was quite dark here, I checked in the house around 5.30 and she was in nestbox but awake and alert and tried to run away from my hand as usual, different this morning though, she didn't come out and was still in nestbox, didn't try to stand up or run away

 

We have brought her indoors to the kitchen in a warm box but she cant seem to stand for any length of time, tail is very down, won't touch sweetcorn (unheard of!) and pooed something very watery with green bits in and what looked like undigested growers pellets, she is more alert than she was 1/2 hour ago but still making no effort to move.

 

Not drinking either, does this sound like she has picked up cocci now? We have some coxoid left and wondering if we should try to make her drink with treated water or call emergency vet

Typical that these things happen out of hours isn't it I think that you need to weigh up whether you think that you can keep her going throughout today really. It is most likely that a vet will give you antibiotics. You could dose her with Coxoid but the results wont be instant. She will need some support in the way of you keeping her hydrated whatever you decide to do. Give her a thorough examination checking for discharges, chest noises, crop abnormalities, parasites, diarrhoea etc.

Called our chicken vet and they had a clinic this morning, she's had a jab of ivomec and now we just have to syringe water into her and keep our fingers crossed, she's not looking great though and no interest in food, vet said we should see a difference in a couple of hours if she's got a chance

Sadly little June didn't make it and passed away very quietly this evening, she just went to sleep.

 

We'd spent the past 48hrs syringing water & lifeguard, and trying hard to syringe sloppy yoghurt and mash but she never regained any strength, there were a couple of brighter moments where she tried to stand, move or peck at things round about her but even though her food and water were right in front of her she showed no interest unless we made her.

 

Guess we'll never know what it was but I'm pretty sure she wasn't in pain, just not enough strength to pull through

It was in the end, very sad, but we had great pleasure raising her for the 10 weeks and have learnt a few things along the way.

 

It very nearly put me off but as I said we have learnt a few things and if nothing else, in the future we will only buy in 3's as it is heartbreaking to now watch and listen to her penmate, who obviously is wondering where she is and why she is on her own next to the others, will be doing my best to rectify this by the weekend by one method or another.
