Raina
Orakiah was making a right racket earlier (about 3pm) i went outside and there stalking Orakiah was a cat I tried to chase the cat off but it ran down the bottom of the garden ran into the eglu run, reached its paw in and grabbed Orakiah by the wing She pecked it and it let go but it's been back 5 times now. Anyone got any tips on how to scare the cat away? I've tried spraying water, shaking a bottle full of stones and even letting the dogs out (Only when the cats on the bin) but it doesn't seem bothered. Forestchook
Throw a handful of your chocks favorite treat at it? Maybe them rushing at it may scare the cat off or at least teach it some respect. N
madchickenlady
Hmmm. Difficult if you have a determined stalker. My ASBO Chicken taught a prowling cat a lesson just the other day, but then she is quite fearsome! If I see a cat lurking, I tend to chase it and make lots of noise etc. The best deterrent has been the girls themselves, though.
Raina
Guess who's just been ontop of the eglu run????? My mum went leaping out waving a broom and the Collie dog tried to chase it off.The cat just looked at my mum as if it was thinking What are you doing you strange person Think i might go to our local zoo and ask if they sell Tiger poop.Hopefully smearing that on the top of the fence will stop the cat coming over
sari
I know some disagree but if you have a determined cat...a water pistol...it doesn't hurt the cat..gives it a shock...and they are rather fastidious..my Stafford tends to keep all but 1 cat out of the garden..and Florence does the rest! Roobaloo
I know some disagree but if you have a determined cat...a water pistol...it doesn't hurt the cat..gives it a shock...and they are rather fastidious..my Stafford tends to keep all but 1 cat out of the garden..and Florence does the rest! Best thing to do is to get the dog to scare it, if your collie is anything like mine - throw his favourite toy in the same area as the cat and let him fly!! ...the cat needs to be scared of what might happen in your garden. We've had a lot of trouble with cats, one of the newest in the neighbourhood was a big tabby with no fear. He got hold of Toph somehow...thankfully she's a big girl and got free (lost a lot of feathers though) and we were only in the kitchen. He's obviously realised they aren't a worthwhile target but a lot of new young cats have appeared on the scene....young and stupid...but eager. So I go one step further....a bucket of water....out the bedroom window. It overlooks the WIR...so if a cat is in their free-range area or on/around the run, as soon as the alarm goes up (usually Toph as she's now terrified of cats )...the bucket is filled and I quietly open the window. If it's just passing through, I'll leave it be. If it so much as hesistates, it gets a soaking. 9 times out of 10, I miss...but the reaction is the same - run kitty run!! If the chickens are further from the house - water balloons are also good...you need something surprising that seems to suddenly appear. Failing that - electric fencing. Buy, borrow or perhaps hire, kitty will only need one zap and it's unlikely to be back in a hurry. The problem with pistols, dogs being let out etc...most cats know where it all comes from and how long they have to react....so they keep one eye on the door and one eye on the prize.
